City Forest Day (Art of Trees exhibition and performances)

Singing Brown Bodies is a sensory offering into the heart of resonance and rooted connection, reminding us that true attunement with one another and the living world requires deep listening and embodied presence. Created by interdisciplinary artist Jasmine Murrell for City Forest Day 2025 curated by Alyssa Fridgen (presented as part of the Art of Trees exhibition and performances), the piece creates a space where brown bodies ancestral, resilient, and alive can be experienced in new and vibrating ways.

Sound performance with crystal singing bowls, voice, and improvised sonic layers activates the sculptures and the surrounding forest, weaving resonant tones through the space as a living current that invites participants to feel vibrations in their bodies and attune to the shared rhythms between human presence and the trees.

Using organic sculpture as vessel, sound as bridge, and the forest as witness, this piece challenges traditional separations between stillness and vibration, sculpture and performance, inviting introspection, collective resonance, and mutual awakening. It is grounded in themes of embodiment, ancestry, environmental stewardship, and the unseen currents that tie us to each other and the earth.
